Reconstruction of the M-1 "Belarus" highway near Moscow is 83% complete
A major overhaul is underway on the M-1 "Belarus" highway, covering the stretch from km 66 to 84 in the Moscow region. As of today, the construction and installation works at the site are 83% complete.
Currently, in flood-prone areas, crews are busy reinforcing embankment slopes, culvert heads, and drainage ditches. They are also working on the riverbeds of the Nara River at km 73 and the Kapanka River at km 82 of the M-1 "Belarus", along with installing roadway drainage outlets.
In the aggregate, 470 thousand tons of asphalt concrete pavement have been laid on the site, which is 96% of the total volume. The final paving phase will get underway once warm weather sets in for good, as the technology requires stable above-freezing temperatures.
Additionally, the installation of monolithic concrete parapet barrier along the median strip has reached a total length of approximately 34 km, representing 99 percent completion of this work scope. Meanwhile, 40 km of metal crash barrier has been installed along the shoulder side, which is 80% of the planned volume. Installation of structural supports continues, as does the construction of cable ducts and the laying of fiber-optic communication line (FOCL) cables for the automated traffic control system (ATCS).
Twelve road structures are to be constructed along the reconstruction segment. This includes two bridges across the Nara and Kapanka rivers (98% ready), two overpasses as part of traffic interchanges and two overpasses to link disconnected territories. Also, six footbridges are to be constructed to ensure safe pedestrian movement to public transportation stops.
For the comfort of road users, specialists are developing a rest area at km 74 down the M-1 "Belarus", which will provide the opportunity for a safe stop on the expressway and rest-up during long trips. Currently, work is underway over there on the development and installation of traffic control devices, as well as the construction of a sanitary module. Technically, the rest stop is now about 90% complete.
Owing to the reconstruction of the M-1 "Belarus" highway segment, the number of traffic lanes will expand from four to six. This will bolster up the traffic throughput, reduce travel time and improve road safety.
At the moment, 670 workers and 115 units of special equipment are involved in the project.
